What is Existence?

Existence is all that is. It is all-encompassing. It includes:

Why is Existence?

The nature of existence is such that it has no cause. If a cause exists, it must already be part of the existence. Cause and effect are phenomena within existence, not explanations for it. Existence contains all reasons and purposes; it itself has no purpose.

How Did Existence Come Into Being?

Existence has no beginning. Processes and events occur within existence. They cannot be outside existence by definition. If a process exists outside of existence, it becomes part of the existence. We observe processes within existence but not a process that creates it.

When Did Existence Start?

Existence is timeless. Time is a construct within existence, not a framework for it. The concept of time implies a clock and an observer. However, both are within existence. To believe existence has a start or end in time is a blind belief, as it assumes an observer outside existence, which is contradictory.

Where is Existence?

Existence is not located anywhere. Instead locations exist within existence. To assume a place for existence implies a larger existence containing that place. Existence is the container of all places. It itself is not in place.

Who is Existence?

Existence is impersonal. It is not a person or a being. It contains individuals as appearances within itself. Projecting personal qualities onto existence is a limited view.

How Many Existences Are There?

By definition, there can only be one existence. If multiple existences are assumed, they collectively form one larger existence. The apparent multiplicity of forms arises within one whole existence.

Analysis

Existence transcends the dualities of true and false. Even the false exists, making it part of existence. So, existence is beyond duality. Existence is fundamental and contains all other qualities. If something is considered more fundamental, it must also be the part of existence. Existence is one and indivisible. To grasp its essence, one must look beyond concepts, forms and dualities. It is the foundation of all experiences and the context within which everything arises and dissolves.

Studying existence is non-trivial. Language is inadequate to capture the essence of existence. Illusion cannot explain existence. Existence is called as emptiness. But it is not empty in the sense of void. It is full of experiences but devoid of substance. It lacks attributes. Since it is empty, there remains nothing to know, and we call it unknowable. It is called unknowable because there is nothing to know in the existence. Change gives rise to illusions. Illusion requires substance to manifest. Complete emptiness cannot generate illusion, and illusion does not generate itself. There are no external processes creating illusions. Change itself does not exist, only potential exists. This potential manifests as change, which gives rise to illusions. At the core of existence is potential. Emptiness is devoid of all attributes but holds potential. This potential cannot cause anything real but manifests as change, leading to illusions we perceive.
